Black is not 'evil' - remember there really is no natural element of evil in magic. Black is actually a color of protection. It can also give one a self control and help insulate from outside distractions.
It's also seen as a color of sophistication and transition from innocence to knowledge. Some say teenagers in transition from child to adult tend towards this color not only as a rebellion but as a signifier that childhood innocence is lost and they need the protection of black while they ease into adult life.
Of course others it's simply fashion and the fact that very little stains black and it means your wardrobe is always coordinated!
